Just as the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are released, Microsoft announces that Dynamics GP 10.0 is already compatible with them. No service pack required. While my memory is not what it used to be, I do not recall any other new operating system that an existing version of GP was immediately compatible with. We have had customers asking about this for a while now, so this is a very nice surprise. Take a look at the updated GP 10.0 System Requirements for more detail. (Link requires a login.)
On the flip side, according to a recent post on the Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog support for GP 9.0 is not planned on Windows 7 (and I guess Server 2008 R2). While this is not unexpected, it is a little disappointing since GP 9.0 will be supported for another year and a half. Sorry it’s taken me awhile to post back to this. I tried the steps you suggested and I couldn’t make Dynamics works..until today. I have no idea what step made it work but it does. I was then tasked with setting up a new computer running Window 7 32bit with Dynamics GP 9. I went through your steps and after I followed your steps to the T I was able to make it work.
Perfect timing I’m due a raise next week!

So far I really like Windows 7 but I cannot make Dynamics GP9 work with it. It was a serious pain to connect Crystal Reports via ODBC so I can build and run my reports. It took a lot of time searching for a solution. Found out that Windows 7 has two ODBC: 32 and 64. ODBC 32 cannot be found in the control panel you have to find it in c:\windows\system32\odbcad32.exe.
I was excited to read that Dynamics 10 works with Windows 7 now if I can convince the suits to move us forward with it.

While technically not supported, I have GP 9.0 running on Windows 7 with no problems, there are a few things that I recommend to make it work:
1. Perform the installation as the local/built-in administrator (not simply a user in the local admin group or a domain admin).
2. Install outside of Program Files (this is not a requirement, but I have found it to be more reliable).
3. Prior to installing any GP service packs, install SP 1 for .NET Framework 1.1.
4. For 64-bit OS you must use the 32-bit ODBC – sounds like you already found that – this is not specific to Windows 7, it would be true for any OS.

As far as upgrading, since GP 2010 has been out for a while, I would recommend upgrading to GP 2010, not GP 10.0. This blog post also has some information you might find helpful on support dates for the various GP versions.

Thank you Victoria for the information. I tried your suggestions but it still is not working.
I logged in as system administrator (I am the SA here) and installed the software. First issue I came up to is I was never given a choice where to install the software. The installation software automatically installed it in the Program Folder.
After install I ran the Utilities program and received the error: “Unhandled script exception:
Could not load external ‘Init_WatchDog@RCWD.dll’. EXCEPTION_CLASS_SCRIPT_MEMORY SCRIPT_CMD_EXTERN” I click OK then Dynamics freezes for a bit when I can log in I receive the error “The database setup has not been completed for Microsoft Dynamics GP. Use Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities to complete the database setup before starting Microsoft Dynamics GP.” I click OK about six times then I receive the following message, “A product installed on your computer is on a different version than the database version. You will not be able to use the application until this issue is resolved. Use the GP_LoginErrors.log file in your temp directory to assists in resolving the issue.” I click OK. Then receive the following error, “Unhandled script exception: Could not load external ‘Kill_WatchDog@RCWD.dll’. EXCEPTION_CLASS_SCRIPT_MEMORY SCRIPT_CMD_EXTERN”
Looking at the error log it lists the database version: 90281 Client Version: 90114.
Any suggestions wise Dynamics Guru Lady?

Hi Cindy,
I have never seen a GP install not give you an option on the location of the installation, so already something does not sound right. Also, you cannot log into Windows as ‘sa’ – that is a SQL Server login, not a Windows login. For any software installations, I recommend logging into Windows as the “built-in administrator for administering the computer/domain” – if you look at a list of local users on the computer, there should only be one user listed with this description.
At this point, however, it sounds like GP is already installed, but you are not on the right service pack. To be able to install the right service pack you MUST install SP 1 for .NET Framework 1.1 first. Here is the link for this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8f5654f-088e-40b2-bbdb-a83353618b38&DisplayLang=en. Once that is in place, install the appropriate GP service pack – looks like you need SP 2 from the version numbers.
If there is still an issue, when you are launching either GP or Utilities, instead of just clicking on it, right click and choose ‘Run as administrator’.
