Dynamics GP 2010 implementation book coming soon

My book, Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 Implementation, is off to the publishing house and should be ready to ship soon.

While the primary goal of the book is to help with new implementations of GP in small to mid-size companies, there’s something in it for everyone. Just to highlight part of the content, this book has step-by-step guides for:

  • Installing SQL Server 2008, Dynamics GP 2010 and Integration Manager 11.0.
  • Using Integration Manager to import master records and  open transactions into GP.
  • Setting up the Dynamics GP system and company, as well as the core GP modules.
  • Checking SQL Server settings and setting up a SQL Server maintenance plan for Dynamics GP.

A more complete description can be found on the publisher’s site, where you can also take advantage of some great savings by pre-ordering the book now.

      • Hi Victoria
a personal advise question, I’m planning to go to convergence, would you totally recommend it, is it really worth it?
        Thanks

        • Hi Ferac,

That’s hard to answer without knowing more about why you would want to go and what you do with GP. I think that there are situations for which Convergence would be a good investment and worth the time. I personally am not going this year and have not gone in the past few years, because I did not feel that I could spare the time away and would get enough for the time lost and the expense.

  2. Hi Victoria

I need to have sales tax be charged on sales order that we ship in our state. How is that configured. We can add it manually but of course my users want everthing done for them. I have assigned the tax schedule ID we need to use to all of the in state ship to addresses in the system,. Yet when we do a new order and save it not tax comes up I still have to manually go into sales tax summary entry screen and add it there.

    Thanks

    • Hi Vic,

There are quite a number of steps to setting up taxes, not easy to simply explain in a blog comment. Since you’re posted this under my book post, I will say that this setup is covered in the book. 🙂

Typically, what I see when taxes are not calculating as expected is that the 3 things needed are not all in place, they are:
      1. the tax setting of the item
      2. the tax setting for the customer’s ship to address
      3. the shipping type of the shipping method

If shipping and misc. amounts also need to be taxed, additional setup may be needed in the SOP module. Also important is that once an SOP transaction is in place, taxes will typically not recalculate when settings are changed, so all the settings have to be in place prior to entering the SOP transaction.

  4. For anyone out there who has not authored a book or known someone that has, after watching the process from the sidelines, I can tell you that it is quite an undertaking and not for the meek. I have had the pleasure of working with Victoria for well over 10 years now and I can also tell you that she brings to this book the same level of dedication, expertise and insight that she tirelessly brings to the GP community each and every day. Congratulations Victoria, you’ve been a true inspiration to me, and I also am looking forward to receiving my (paid LOL like Mariano) copy of your book. 🙂

  10. Great. Already got the 2010 cookbook and am looking forward to the upgrade.

1 question first, Can I safely install 2010 along-side of Ver-10 and import my data for testing and if all looks well, ‘cut over’ to 2010? I would like to save my ‘VAR budget’ for assistance with SSRS (Which could also use some better ‘getting started’ articles in the various groups).

    • Ryan,

You can install GP 2010 on the same computer as GP 10.0…but you will need a separate SQL Server instance for the GP 2010 data. So you would have 2 different sets of data if you wanted to test an upgrade to GP 2010. It’s not just a matter of a different version of the application looking at the same set of data – that will not work with GP. If you’ve not done this before and you’re not going to get help from your GP partner, at the very least make sure to read the documentation: https://mbs.microsoft.com/customersource/documentation/setupguides/gp2010_upgrade.

      • Thanks, It looks like I will have to use the partner for the upgrade. I have a smaller var whom has not yet done any 2010 upgrades and I don’t want to finance their education so I guess I’m stuck in 10 for awhile.
